What is a Detox Diet?

Article by MBB4502

In the past, when someone referred to detoxification, it was primarily meant as the process used to help people addicted to drugs and alcohol overcome their addiction. While detoxification is still used for these purposes; many people are now using detoxification to improve their health. A Detox Diet is one of the means used to accomplish this.

There are many methods to be used by folks interested in cleansing their bodies from potential harmful toxins and wastes built up inside. We all seem to want a step-by-step plan and these plans are available in abundance. Just do a regular internet search for ‘detox diet’ and you will be amazed at the sheer number of plans you will find. There are variations among them all and the best way to select a plan for you is to evaluate them according to which one you think you can and will follow.

Don’t forget that the goal of undertaking a detox diet is to rid our body of harmful toxins and wastes. There are many things that seem to make their way into our bodies, even if we do not consume them. For whatever reason, even if you do not consume alcohol or use drugs, it is possible for these toxins and unwanted chemicals to make their way into our bodies. Also, recently studies indicate that much of our drinking water contains more than H2O and flouride!

Be certain that you choose your foods and beverages wisely. With the main goal of detoxification being to cleanse your body and make it pure again, it stands to reason that it would be intelligent to monitor what we intentionally put inside ourselves in the first place. Think about the potentially harmful foods and drinks you are putting into your body. Do you drink coffee or other caffeinated beverages? Remember, then, that caffeine is allright, but only in moderation. However, caffeine is not something our body needs to thrive so if you plan to undertake a detox diet it stands to reason that you should forego coffee and other forms of caffeine during the detox. In fact, once you have withdrawn from caffeine, why bother to even add it back?

Some people who drink coffee and flavored sodas do so for more than the caffeine jolt. They just want the boost of something flavorful to drink. So, during your detox diet, you might want to plan on drinking natural fruit juices which are flavorful and good for you at the same time. While water won’t satisfy the need for a flavor boost, it is still the beverage of choice in most detox plans.

It is important to consume plenty of foods that are high in fiber. Eliminating toxins and wastes is the main reason most people undergo a detox diet. The easiest and best way to expel these is by regulating our digestive tract through providing it with plenty of fiber and drinking plenty of water. Expect to make many trips to the bathroom while on your detox plan.

We are told often that our food today is overridden with additives and completely unnecessary chemicals. While most of these are safe for consumption, we really don’t need them to survive and thrive. So, while on our particular detoxification plan, we should eliminate foods and beverages with the added chemicals. Eating organic is the best way to achieve this. Be sure to shop smart, though, as most organic products cost more than their non-organic counterparts. Look for sales and stock up on non-perishables if you are lucky enough to find them.

Good luck to you as you begin your personal journey to make your body as healthy as can be. Be sure to listen to your own body. If the diet you chose is too strict, gradually add back, while still trying to be as healthy as you can be. If the length of time seems too long for you, shorten it. Keep in mind, though, that if at all possible it is wise to incorporate some of the detox diet into your everyday life. If you did without caffeine for the diet, try to continue living without it. If you ate organic and can afford to continue to do so, you should. The goal is to remain as healthy as we can for as long as we can. I wish you the best.
