The Detox Diet – A Thousand Year Old Tradition

Article by Jeremiah Cooke

Much has been written about the detox diet (detoxification) over the decades. It seems the past ten years, roughly, have seen an explosion of these diets. The basic principle is the same across all of them, and that is to use foods (or liquids) to help your body get rid of toxins. First, we must caution you and suggest you talk to your doctor before embarking on any kind of detox diet. Many people turn to this overall approach when they want to lose weight. While it is possible to achieve that, we feel the loss will be temporary for a variety of reasons. We will talk more about the detox diet in the rest of this article. There are two basic approaches with many types of detox diets. First, the diet calls for avoiding foods that are known to introduce toxins in your body. Naturally, that is probably something every person should do, anyway. Secondly, the particular diet will recommend you eat foods, or drink liquids, that support the body’s ability to process and eliminate toxins. There is a fairly large variety of detox diets, and frequently they also require that your intake of calories is reduced, as well. You will find some that have you eat much smaller portions or even go on liquid fasting such as with juices, only. Studies have shown that when the body is more acidic than alkaline, it will be more unhealthy. The main goal of most detoxification diets is to return the body’s pH levels back to alkaline. There are some approaches that are completely liquid based that include water (of course), premixed herbal detox teas, lemon water or ginger teas. When you seek help with natural health, you will find a long list of herbal detox remedies. One of the best ways to find the information you need on what herbal tea does what, is to visit your local organic health food store. Interestingly, what you will find is very many herbal preparations contain detox action.Several of the after effects of a strong detox diet can be very uncomfortable. Some include an upset stomach, lack of strength and headaches. A more specialized establishment is what some choose to go to when they are going through the detox process because of the weird symptoms. Definitely for even a short fast, those with medical problems need to take some time consulting with their doctor. The benefits of a proper detox diet with an appropriate and safe recovery are there. But you can see how a person could be setting him or herself up for problems if they are careless about it. The conditions for which the detox diet may be helpful are often associated with the effects of living in a highly industrialized society. But it’s more the lifestyles that are prevalent within that particular type of society. Your stress level and your exercise and eating habits are all major factors.
