The first point to note when undertaking any natural cleanse is that you may experience short term negative side effects. These are entirely normal and a good sign that your holistic detox is working! Some of these side effects may include:

1. Anxiety, depression, irritability, mood swings, poor concentration and self pity.

2. Constipation, diarrhoea, flatulence and nausea.

3. Withdrawal symptoms (e.g. caffeine) in the form of feeling cold, flu-like symptoms, headaches and insomnia.

4. Coughs, rashes or spots, strong smelling and dark urine and strong smelling body odour.

Basically you may not feel like being social or working and hence I recommend doing this 3 day detox (or any other) on a weekend or in a holiday. The best way to counter these side effects is to prepare for the detox in the week leading up to it. Of course it is also possible that your side effects may be very mild, especially with the 3 day detox diet.

This means cutting back on certain things like cigarettes, alcohol, caffeine, any fizzy drinks, fast foods, fried foods, any dairy, meat or wheat products, artificial additives, sugar and salt. You also need to explain to your family that you need time alone and buy everything you need to make your detox more comfortable e.g. some DVD films to watch, some relaxing books, all the special food you need and a do not disturb sign to hang outside your detox room!

During the detox take relaxing baths, distract yourself with a good film, drink as much water as possible, take psyllium capsules or linseeds to help the bowels eliminate the toxins that will be released and if possible get a massage. Do not use painkillers (e.g. headache tablets) or deodorants because they are sources of toxins and you are trying to rest your body!
