Consider the Facts Before Detoxifying Your Body

Article by Gaetan Ross

Have you decided to detoxify your body? You may be one of the millions of Americans who has heard the reports on the amount of excess waste and therefore toxins built up in your system. Figures show that you could have as much as 20 pounds of waste in your colon as we speak. This motivates many people to take action, but before you get started you might want to be sure you are a good candidate for a cleanse.

To determine if you would benefit from a cleanse or whole body detox consider these factors:

How is your health? Are you a chronic sufferer of thyroid conditions or diabetes? You should first speak with your personal physician if you have either of these medical conditions. The truth is there are many detox programs on the market today including but not limited to the Master Cleanse, juice fasting and water fasting as well as switching your diet to an organic one. One of these cleanses will work for you but some can lead to potential health risks.

For the females who are interested in a detoxification cleanse it is important to know whether you are pregnant or not. A water fast for example will remove all nutrients from your body. Nutrition is vital for your unborn child as well as your own health while you are in this delicate condition. If you are pregnant or breast-feeding you should never do a water fast. Even the Master Cleanse and a juice fast are bad ideas because you will never be able to get the proper nutrition. When you are pregnant and want to detox your only option really is to eat healthy and get plenty of exercise.

The next thing you will want to consider is your schedule, both the daily and weekly. On the Master Cleanse, it is recommended that you detox for at least 10days. During this time, you will have several side effects come into play not the least of which are numerous trips to the bathroom. You may be able to continue with your normal day-to-day schedule but many people find this hard. You could of course alter your schedule a bit and make sure you begin the detox diet on the weekend.

Weight is something else to consider. When you are carrying around extra weight, detox diets are recommended. Your body, as you read above, can store as much as 20 pounds of fecal matter and toxins. When you are of normal weight it is generally much less than this. Many people have tried all manner of diets and exercise with little success at losing weight, if this sounds like you it may be time for a detox diet. You should never do a cleanse purely to lose weight, but if you are looking to improve your health as well as lose weight it is a good method.

Can you stay on task and focused on your goals? Any of the three main methods for detoxifying your body will require you to eliminate solid food from the agenda. Regardless of the length of your fast or cleanse you will experience some severe hunger pangs. You may also experience nausea, headaches and vomiting. This causes many people to want to give up right away. If you do, it is okay, however if you can stay on task and get through this difficult stage you will see great success. When you are quite sure, you cannot do without food for five days or more you may want to look at other detox options. Increasing fiber and water consumption along with moderate exercise can improve your overall health also.

As a rule you will not have any harm come to you from doing a cleanse or body detox, that is unless you already have health problems. Listening to your body is the best defense you have against potential problems. If pain or discomfort is unbearable or lasts more than a couple of days, you should seek medical help.
